Review of the Pax Christi Concert

Pax Christi Chorale,a community choir from Toronto, gave a concert in St.Mary’s on 30th July conducted by Stephanie Martin an Associate Professor at York University,Toronto This was as part of their Tour Of England which started on 22nd July.
T
he choir processed in singing Tallis’ ‘If Ye Love Me’ and then sang a well chosen mixture of secular and religious pieces by European and Canadian composers, producing a very pleasing sound.
As well as singing a piece by their conductor, the choir also sang ‘Epitaph for Moonlight’ by the Canadian composer R.Murray Schafer. This was not sung from a traditional score but from sheets of instructions showing chromatic swoops for the various voices. The resulting sound was interesting and ethereal.
Overall,a very good and well received concert by sadly,a fairly small audience.
A retiring collection raised approx.£138.0.
On 31st July, the choir sang the morning and evening services at Gloucester Cathedral.
