The Faroe Islands: A Voyage of Discovery at St Mary’s

Travel Lecturer Monday 23rd October: The Faroe Islands: A Voyage of Discovery

In the previous lecture we reached Great Britain’s remotest island group of St Kilda on board the small heritage ship the Serenissima and this month we continue the a place I’ve long wonted to visit: The Faroe Islands.  This small archipelago lays about 175 miles NW of Shetland with which it has many similarities in both landscape and culture. We will also discover the special links forged between the islands and Britain during WWII. During the three days we spend sailing among the islands we were able to explore some amazing places from the capital and port of Tórshavn; the medieval settlement of Kirkjubøur; the towering cliffs of Vestmanna and finally the most westerly island of Mykines famous for its seabirds including puffins – everybody’s favourite!

It promises to be a great evening. So bring along your friends; all are welcome.  There will be the usual themed biscuits to enjoy in the interval. As the Faroese don’t produce any wine the star prize in the raffle is a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with the intriguing name of “Duck ‘n’ Pheasant” which links with a couple of the slides, so look out for the ducks!  There is no admission charge for the evening as we invite donations, which we ask everyone who is able to Gift Aid as this raises more for St. Mary’s Restoration Funds, which we need to complete the next stages of the planned refurbishment of St Mary’s: The Tower Clock and the Baptistery. We have a big target to reach if we’re to complete everything in time for our Bicentenary in 2020; so A VERY BIG THANK YOU to all those who have supported my travel lectures ( and that includes my faithful band of helpers who do so much to ensure the success of these very enjoyable evenings). So far the lectures have raised well nearly £9,000.  So let’s see what we can achieve by the end of 2017!
