Travel Lecture: Monday 10th April St Mary’s Church Hall 7.30pm Exploring Newfoundland: Part 3 The Far North and South Labrador
Continuing our exploration of Newfoundland, we travel to St Anthony at the northern tip of the Northern Peninsula, where we will discover the remarkable story of Dr Wilfred Grenfell (medical missionary) who established the earliest permanent medical services in this remote and challenging area of Newfoundland and South Labrador. We will also visit the Port au Choix National Historic site with its evidence of earlier hunter gather cultures. It’s also famous for its geology, The Barrens, which are home to some special flora. Then it’s me to take the ferry from St Barbe across to Labrador where we will visit the fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Basque Fishing site of Red Bay. The lecture ends on a high note with some spectacular photographs (though I say it myself) of humpback whales feeding on shoals of caplin. A spectacle not to be missed!
There being no local wines, the star raffle prize is an appropriately named Whale Caller, South African Savion Blanc. There’s no admission charge for the evening as we invite dona ons, which we ask everyone who can to Gi Aid as this raises more much needed funds for St. Mary’s Restoration Appeal.
